Why Turkey? An Honest Review
My fascination with Turkey is probably the same as any body else's who has visited this country. One of the main things you will notice is the friendliness of the Turkish people.
Although Turkey is a 99% Muslim country it is also a Secular country, meaning that you are not punished for your religious beliefs & are free to follow whatever religion you choose. Unlike more strict muslim countries, such as Saudi Arabia etc., Turkey has a slightly more relaxed attitude towards the religion. Having said that, you will still hear the (fantastic) sound of the Muezzin chanting - the call to prayer from the minarets of the mosques. Family & friendship are a couple of the important things to any Turk; the family being the most important.
Meal times are almost always spent with the family & it seems unusual to have members of a family eating alone. The Turks also have a great ideal when it comes to older folk. They believe in the fact that you should respect your elders, a trait that seems unfortunately lost in the West.
The combination of East & West culminating in one country is what I think makes Turkey such a wonderful country, hence this 'excited' eyewitness review on the wonderful country of Turkey!
A few of the Turk's favourite past times are tea & coffee drinking. Everywhere you look you will find cafés tea/coffee houses & tea/coffee sellers meandering around streets & alleyways with their turkish tea or coffee sales trolley.
A few years ago apple tea ('Elma cayi' in Turkish) was introduced to the local market, especially for tourists. Of course this has nothing to do with traditional Turkish Black Tea; it's sweet and caffeine-free, with a mild apple flavor.
Another favourite, especially amongst the older generation males, are the games of chess & backgammon. These guys will sit for hours playing these games whilst drinking turkish tea, smoking & talking about anything & everything.
I have only visited the tourist areas of Turkey & although everywhere I have been the places are different but the people are the same. I can't imagine walking around the streets of Britain & being asked by a shop keeper or stall holder, if I would like a cup of tea or coffee & yet I have walked out of one shop (after sitting & talking for half an hour or so drinking turkish apple tea) only to walk a few yards & be asked if I would like some more apple tea from another shop owner!
This is what makes Turkey enjoyable for me. Friendliness.
Another thing I noticed on my very first visit to Turkey (in 96) is the fact that most of the guys you run in to, shop/stall holders, cafe pr's, boat trip sales, etc seem to speak a multitude of languages. Obviously this is due to being able to converse with the many different countries' tourists that visit Turkey every year. I find this fantastic, simply because these people WANT to be able to talk to other people from outside their own country. Most British people find it hard to speak one language let alone two or more!
For a sheer fascinating place to visit I would highly recommend a visit to Turkey. I think it will definately leave an everlasting impression on you & I also think you may find it an addictive country, in the fact that you will always want to go back. So in these brief words I hope I have explained why I wanted to make this site about Turkey.
