Turkish Food

On this page I will tell you a little about Turkish food. When in Turkey I like to eat traditional Turkish food but there are places where English food is available.

Baklava. Traditional Turkish food.Turkey is one of the worlds biggest exporter of food produce & thus a country that is very self sufficient, where food is concerned.
Meal times are a very important time for Turkish people, as quite often the main meal is a form of an evening's entertainment. A typically Turkish main meal can last for many hours. The meal is not normally enjoyed solely by the family, but also by the neighbours.

A typical meal would begin with 'Meze's',starters, this is a large selection of tasty dishes, carefully prepared & served individually from the centre of the dining table. Meats & vegetables are the main diet for the Turks. Meze's & main meals would consist of meat of some sort. Rice & salad is also a big part of any meal. Desserts are very sweet, with the idea of complimenting the mainly savory flavouring of the main meal.
Pastries are also a very big part of Turkish eating.

Turkish coffee. At all meals plenty of tea & coffee are drunk, & for something slightly stronger, the spirit 'Raki' , 'lions milk' as it is also known this is an aniseed flavoured drink taken straight or with water & tastes similar to the European drink Pernod.

Turkish people are great food lovers & they certainly know how to make a totally enjoyable occasion out of a meal time.
If you are ever fortunate to be invited for a family meal, you would be silly to turn down the offer.
